This book fits together multiple layers including print, motion design, and coding, to create an engaging travel guide that is a seamless blend of storytelling and technology. Designed to promote tourism in Kannur, Kerala, this project incorporates augmented reality elements that bring destinations to life through animated visuals and coded interactions.

Kannur is a city along the Malabar coast, tucked away in the northern part of Kerala. It’s where I spent all my summers at - enjoying the enthralling views by the shore, eating mouth-watering traditional delicacies, and getting immersed into their culture. However, tourism in Kannur isn’t very popular even though it is as beautiful as the other popular tourist destinations in Kerala, like Kochi or Wayanad.
It’s a tourist guide, carefully curated for the layman - by someone who knows Kannur in and out - to perfectly experience what the city has to offer if you were to spend a weekend there.
The places being recommended would be around the ideas of - the locals recommended spot for a flavourful experience, a place for the divine, their favourite thing to do, a place to hang out and unwind, and their go-to place with a historic significance.
This book was brought to life with an interactive experience where digital elements (2D animation) were superimposed upon real-world views to bring things to life through your screen.
The purpose of AR in this project is to give the users an idea of their sensory experiences - what they'd be seeing around, and the sounds they'd hear at the particular place once visited.
The pages with illustrations can be scanned through the website headnorthtokannur.com to reveal 2D animations of the place.
In a world before ChatGPT, the most interesting and challenging part about this project was copywriting. 20% of the project timeline was solely spent on perfecting the sentences and ensuring a truly heartwarming read for the end users.
